Giving a niche science a personality of its own

Clinical flow cytometry is technically complex, specialist-facing, and visually dry by default. The challenge was to build a distinctive brand identity for Sysmex's flow cytometry portfolio — one that stood apart from the established Haemostasis identity, cut through an already-crowded market, and stayed coherent within the Sysmex brand system.

Strategic context: Clinical flow cytometry was a red ocean — a crowded market already owned by established players, entered late. Competing on sameness meant losing. So the play was a blue-ocean one: don't fight on the same terms — be unmistakably different.

The challenge

Two product lines, one brand — but they needed to feel different.

Sysmex's Haemostasis portfolio already had a strong campaign identity — teal, clinical, the "Four Powers" framework, "Activate your coagulation powers." Clinical flow cytometry served a different audience (haematologists, oncologists, research labs) with different needs, a different competitive set, and a different emotional register.

There was a harder problem underneath. Sysmex came to market late: the launch of the XF-1600 flow cytometer — the milestone that finally completed the portfolio, alongside the PS-10 sample-preparation system — arrived after competitors were already established and owning the space. A quiet, conventional launch from a latecomer would simply be overlooked. So the brief was unambiguous — be loud, be different, be bold. Playing it safe wasn't an option; it was the fastest way to stay invisible.

Building a second distinct brand expression within the same corporate system required a deliberate creative decision: what makes flow cytometry feel different — bold enough to cut through — without breaking from Sysmex's overall identity?

The creative decision — differentiation within the system

Let the science set the tone.

The answer was in the science itself. Flow cytometry is about movement, data streams, and precision in motion. The visual language needed to reflect that — and feel genuinely different from Haemostasis.

Haemostasis

"Activate your coagulation powers"

Teal palette. Lab technician with floating digital interfaces. Technical authority. Four Powers framework. Serious, precise, EMEA-wide launch energy.

Clinical flow cytometry

"Get into the flow!"

Green/sage + purple palette. Disco-lit scientists celebrating. Fluid motion. Irreverent, energetic, specialist-to-specialist tone. Science with personality.

The strategic risk worth taking

Showing scientists in a disco setting is unconventional for healthcare B2B. The decision was deliberate: clinical flow cytometry has a tight specialist community that responds to insider humour. A campaign that made those scientists feel seen — rather than spoken at — would outperform a safe, clinical alternative. And for a late entrant in a market competitors already owned, loud and different wasn't just creatively appealing — it was the brief. The visual risk was the point.

Execution — channels & formats

One flow, every format.

The campaign wasn’t a single execution. It was a system — designed to scale across seasons, formats, and touchpoints while staying emotionally consistent.

Brand governance — differentiation within consistency

The Clinical Flow Cytometry campaign demonstrates a specific brand strategy skill: building a distinctive sub-brand identity that enriches the parent brand rather than fragmenting it.

Both Haemostasis and Clinical Flow Cytometry share Sysmex's corporate brand architecture — the "Together for a better healthcare journey" claim, the logo, the quality promise. But each has a visual identity that serves its own audience and scientific domain. That differentiation was a deliberate strategic choice, not a creative accident. It required clear governance guidelines, stakeholder alignment across product management, and a communication matrix that ensured local markets could adapt without breaking either identity.

Key learnings

When you enter late, differentiation is survival — with competitors already owning the category, a conservative launch concedes it. Being loud and distinctive was a direct answer to the competitive timing, not just a creative preference.

Sub-brand differentiation is a strategic discipline — it requires as much rigour as the original brand architecture. Visual freedom without a governance framework creates fragmentation.

Specialist audiences reward specificity — the disco concept worked because it spoke directly to a tight-knit scientific community. The same idea would not have worked for a general healthcare audience.

Motion and fluidity as brand language — "Get into the flow" is more than a tagline. It shaped every visual and copy decision: curves over angles, energy over precision, collaboration over individual achievement.
